UK: Asda opens landmark 150th Asda On the Move convenience store
Asda has opened its 150th Asda On the Move store, in partnership with EG Group, marking the latest milestone in its ambitious plans to roll out 200 of the roadside convenience store formats by the end of 2023. The 150th Asda on The Move store is located at Baynards Green Services in Bicester, Oxfordshire and will be the third Asda On the Move in the local area. The store stocks over 1,300 branded and own-label products to provide a more extensive offering of fresh produce and chilled lines than is traditionally found on fuel forecourts.

Discount channel the fastest-growing in France in Q1, says Kantar
The discount channel reported a 0.4 percentage point increase in market share in France in the first quarter of 2023, to hold 11% of the market, new data from Kantar has shown. Led by Aldi, which grew its market share to 3.0% during the quarter (a 0.2 percentage point gain), and Lidl, which now sits on 8% (a 0.1 percentage point gain), the discount channel was the fastest growing during the period.

Japan: Seven & i's Ito-Yokado and York to merge this year
Japanese retail group Seven & i Holdings Co. plans to integrate supermarket units Ito-Yokado Co. and York Co. within 2023 at the earliest. The move is aimed at turning the group's supermarket business in the Tokyo metropolitan area profitable in the next three years by consolidating their goods development and distribution functions to reduce fixed costs.

Carrefour takes over Cora's activities in Romania
Carrefour announces the signature of an agreement with Louis Delhaize Group for the acquisition of its activities in Romania, including 10 Cora hypermarkets and 8 Cora Urban stores, and nearly 2,400 employees. Australian grocer Coles sees Q3 inflation ease, but pressure remains
Australian No. 2 supermarket chain Coles Group Ltd said store price inflation eased in the March quarter as supply chain blockages improved, but flagged a surge of demand as living cost pressures lead to more people eating at home. Coles said supermarket sales jumped 7% in the third quarter to A$8.6bln ($5.7bln), better than analysts forecast, as it passed wholesale costs to shoppers. Total supermarket inflation slowed to 6.2% from 7.7% three months earlier, when flooding elevated fresh produce costs.

Price the ‘biggest hurdle’ in plant-based category: Study
A cross-national survey from Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food and Analytics Lab of 5,507 respondents found that only 22.3% deem plant-based alternatives affordable. Over the last 12 months, 34% said they had consumed a plant-based meat alternative. Thirty-one per cent had consumed a plant-based meat alternative at least one a week, while 19.8% said “a few times a month.”

Amazon beats expectations in first quarter earnings as shares jump 11%
Amazon shares jumped more than 11%, as income from its cloud computing and advertising units beat estimates for the first quarter of the year. The e-commerce behemoth, which is in the midst of aggressively cutting costs including laying-off 27,000 workers, said revenue for the quarter was $127.4bln, a 9% growth compared to the $116.4bln it reported during the same period last year.
