Calypso® Mango season is officially underway with more than 50 million are expected to be picked this summer.
Second generation Calypso® Mango grower Daniel Niceforo says excellent weather conditions has brought a great crop to the top end.
"Australians love their mangoes and there is always great demand for fresh and delicious Calypso® Mangoes throughout summer," Daniel said. “We monitor the mangoes every day and leave them to hang on the tree for as long as possible, so when they hit the stores, they are full of flavour and ready to eat. Picking always starts first in the Territory with the warm winter giving us delicious Calypso® Mangoes through spring. Harvesting then shifts to Far North Queensland for the summer fruit."
Perfection Fresh CEO, Michael Simonetta expects a strong season across all growing regions.
“The Territory mangoes in store now taste fantastic and over the border in Queensland, growers are having a fantastic year with just the right balance of cool nights and warm days to nurture Calypso® Mangoes to maturity," he said. "This means we’ll have lots of delicious fruit ready to meet the bigger demand over Christmas and summer."
Calypso® Mango is the “daughter” of the Kensington Pride and Sensation varieties.
"This hybrid has taken the best of both varieties and combined them into one, to give you the perfect mango," Daniel said.
Calypso® Mangoes are known for their blushing skin and they have a smaller seed than the other varieties, which means there’s more flesh to enjoy every time. The flavour is milder than other varieties and they have a fibre-free flesh.
The Calypso® Mango season usually runs from September through to March, and will be supported by a new brand campaign across TV, video, radio, digital, print and social channels.
