The Egyptian Wonderful pomegranates are about to be harvested and according to one exporter, weather did affect the yield but also made for larger sizes. They’ll be focusing on various markets in Europe, Russia, South-East Asia and Canada this season.
According to Ralph Nakhal, who works at Egyptian exporter Tomna, the pomegranates in Egypt are of better quality this season: “The pomegranates season in Egypt is looking good so far. We will start shipping in a week from now with the local variety which is very sweet in taste, after which we will start the harvest with the Wonderful variety up until mid-October. This year's pomegranates are of better quality on the trees, which will lead to a good export season.”
Although demand for pomegranates is already stable, Nakhal expects demand to increase as soon as the Wonderful variety arrives on the markets. “We are expecting to export very good volumes, around 1,000 tons, to South-East Asia, Russia, Canada and Europe this year. Weather definitely affected the yield of pomegranates on the trees due to the high temperature in March during the flowering season, however the sizing is larger this year. Demand for pomegranates at the moment is stable but we expect an increase in demand in the coming weeks, once Wonderful hits the market.”
Meanwhile Tomna also has its focus on planting garlic for the new season: “For the rest of the season, we anticipate continuing exporting pomegranates until mid-December with an increase in demand as we progress. We are also currently in the midst of our Garlic planting season, which will last up until mid-October. We are very excited about what the next garlic season will bring us, as well as the upcoming pomegranate season!” Nakhal concludes.
