Fresh mango is one of the fruits on the Peruvian coast that has been most affected by the effects of El NiƱo. The high temperatures affected the flowering of the mango trees, which led to a decrease in production and, consequently, to a decline in exports this season.
As a result, the current season -which began in September of last year- faces a significant delay compared to the previous season. In the first week of this year, remittances of the product reached 3,475 tons, i.e. 79% less than in the same week in 2023. So far in the current campaign, the country has exported a total of 19,159 tons of mango, i.e. 80% less volume when compared to last season.
In the remainder of the campaign, prices should increase due to the shortage of mangoes and the stability in demand. However, the price increase won't fully compensate for the drop in volume.
During the first week, the product was shipped to 24 destinations. The main destinations were the United States with a 63% share, the Netherlands with 17%, and Spain with 4%. All these markets experienced a notable reduction in mango imports from Peru. The United States purchased 2,181 tons, i.e. 72% less than in the same week of last year; the Netherlands purchased 589 tons (-87%), and Spain, 151 tons (-57%).
