The supply of raspberries has been on the tighter side. "California is winding down and Mexico has been bombarded with rain for the last five to six weeks," says Chris Martin of Westlake Produce Co., adding that raspberries are being harvested in Baja California as well as the Mexican states of Michoacan and Jalisco. As the season transitions to Mexico, production will remain there throughout the fall and winter months.
Historically, the raspberry supply at this time of year is tighter with elevated prices during the transition. This year, the weather has been more of a factor contributing to those higher prices.
Martin says the availability of raspberries should continue to grow in the coming weeks.
Strong demand for raspberries
Meanwhile, demand is superseding the availability of raspberries. "Raspberry consumption is continuing to grow," says Martin, adding that pricing has been strengthening on the berry. It's also a popular item to have on promotion in ads which can keep the product on the tighter side.
That said, looking ahead, depending on the weather patterns, the availability of raspberries should continue to grow in the coming weeks.
