Dominican Republic boosts strawberry production with macrotunnels and exports

In the Dominican Republic, the government is channeling resources into the growth of strawberry production, focusing on areas such as Jarabacoa, Constanza, Ocoa, Hondo Valle, and Azua. Jarabacoa has emerged as a leading site for this cultivation due to its climate. The Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA) has rolled out a project featuring 20 Macrotunnels with a budget of USD 165,400, covering an area of 12.5 square meters each. These structures aim to shield the crops, conserve water, and mitigate pest problems.

This initiative was presented to the Jarabacoa Strawberry Producers Association, which has over 60 members. Since President Luis Abinader's term began, the support for strawberry farmers has seen enhancements, including a refrigerated collection center and the Macrotunnels. In 2023, the Dominican Republic's fruit exports surpassed 134,000 metric tons. The government's target for 2024 is to exceed 200,000 metric tons. FEDA's efforts include backing strawberry producers across the nation and promoting the annual National Strawberry Festival in Constanza, highlighting the strawberry sector.
