UK: Lidl unwraps six stores, just in time for Christmas
Lidl has opened six state-of-the-art stores nationwide as households gear up for Christmas. Four new stores have opened in Shinfield, Bovey Tracey, Downham Market, and Stirchley. Alongside these, a new store in Connah's Quay has replaced the old Lidl in the town, whilst its site in Chessington has reopened following a full refurbishment and extension.

Brown onion 'hack': Supermarket shoppers warned they could be prosecuted
Supermarket shoppers using a "brown onion hack" to reduce their grocery bills are being warned it is theft. One shopper, whom RNZ has agreed not to identify, said she had resorted to putting all of her fruit and vegetables through the self-checkout as "brown onions" to save money. Brown onions are currently selling for $1.49 a kilogram, compared to oranges for $5. Foodstuffs spokesperson Stefan Herrick said the company was aware of the trend being discussed online. "It's important to clarify this isn't a hack - it's theft".

Report: Health and wellness is a $285bln market
The health and wellness industry is on the rise, and brands and retailers that can crack the affordability code can position themselves to win that segment of the growing market, according to a report by data analytics firm dunnhumby. The report "Better for you (Customer), You (Brand) and You (Retailer)" shows that health-conscious shoppers represent $285bln in grocery spend annually, making up roughly a third of the $1.7tln grocery industry. Natural and organic-focused grocery chains like Natural Grocers, Amazon Fresh, and The Fresh Market are identified in the report as the leading retailers for health-conscious consumers. These chains and others that cater to this customer demographic are enjoying average annual growth of 7%, according to dunnhumby.

Costco Wholesale Corporation ("Costco" or the "Company") reported net sales of $21.87bln for the retail month of November, the four weeks ended December 1, 2024, an increase of 5.6% from $20.71bln last year. US: Dollar General slowing fresh produce rollout to stores
Dollar General's efforts to bring fresh produce to locations will continue into the new year, but at a slower pace compared to years prior. Dollar General plans to begin selling fresh produce at approximately 300 more locations in 2025, bringing the total number of stores that have this offering to roughly 7,000, CEO Todd Vasos told investors during an earnings call. From 2022 to 2023, Dollar General added produce to more than 1,800 stores, bringing the store count that offered fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 5,000 locations.

Aldi reported opening nearly 120 new locations this year, bringing the chain closer to its goal of opening 800 new U.S. locations by the end of 2028.
