Greenhouse farming in Antalya boosts Turkey's fruit and vegetable exports

Antalya is renowned not only for its citrus fruits, pomegranates, and persimmons but also for its advanced greenhouse farming, shared Vice President of the Turkish Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Council, Umit Mirza Cavusoglu.

Thanks to new technologies, producers continually increase the volume of greenhouse vegetable production. 50% of Turkish greenhouses and glasshouses that grow vegetables and greens are located in Antalya. These greenhouses use heating systems and drip irrigation, enabling good harvests.

Turkey is also aiming to reduce the use of pesticides by replacing them with biological alternatives, such as entomophages and biological traps.

Additionally, Antalya is home to a major agricultural research institute (BATEM), where scientists work on improving existing fruit and vegetable varieties and developing new ones. Gardeners and greenhouse enterprises have already achieved very good results in terms of the cleanliness and safety of their products.

Despite challenges, the production of organic fruits and vegetables is also growing in Antalya. The government supports farmers by providing subsidies for electricity and water.

Fruits and vegetables are among the main goods that Turkey exports. Specifically, tangerines and peaches are in high demand in international markets. Export goods undergo stricter selection and calibration to meet the high standards of buyers.
