Fresh tomato consumption stagnates, processed goods see growth

Fewer local tomatoes in European winters, more imports from Morocco

The production of fresh tomatoes during winter is expected to decline, with a shift towards cultivating smaller varieties. This is the forecast for the tomato market leading up to 2035. The decline in fresh tomato production is projected as a significant trend.

Meanwhile, the consumption of fresh tomatoes is anticipated to remain stable due to growing demand for smaller varieties, particularly snacking tomatoes, which drive increased interest. On average, annual tomato consumption is expected to stay at 15.2 kilograms per person.

In contrast, the EU's production and consumption of processed tomatoes are projected to grow, driven by rising demand for processed foods. Growth is forecasted at 1.2% annually, reaching 23 kilograms per consumer per year by 2035.

The report also examines imports and exports. Imports are expected to continue rising at an annual rate of 0.6%, with Morocco remaining the primary supplier. Conversely, exports are forecasted to decline by 0.2% per year.

All this is shown in the European Commission's'EU agricultural outlook 2024-2035'.
