South Canterbury's berry farmers are anticipating a fruitful season, thanks to favorable weather conditions. Donald Butler, owner of Butler's Fruit Farms, reported an exceptional quality of raspberries without any signs of mold, though he noted it's still the beginning of the season. Despite good sales, Butler mentioned the need for more rain as conditions start to dry.
The region is also preparing to celebrate the 40th year of the Strawberry Fare at Butler's Berry Farm, an event that began with just a few stalls in 1984 and has grown significantly. Andy Saunders-Tack, the chairperson of the Waimate Strawberry Fare organizing committee, highlighted the event's growth to 280 stalls, attracting over 10,000 visitors. This year's fare in Waimate's Seddon Square will feature vendors from across the South Island and some from the North Island, offering a traditional setting for community engagement and pre-Christmas shopping.
Berry growers across the region are optimistic about the season. Robyn McDonald of Blueberry Haven in Kerrytown reported a successful season for blueberries, with no hailstorms, and announced plans to introduce a 'pick your own' option soon. She also highlighted the benefits of recent hot days, despite some frost damage earlier in the season. Donald Ewart from Standcrdu Berry Fruit in Geraldine observed that raspberry and strawberry picking seasons have begun earlier than usual, thanks to favorable weather, although many growers are hoping for more rain.
