Vegetable wholesalers have seen a surge in popularity and sales of 'Kalettes'. Formerly known as 'Flower Sprouts', Kalettes are a hybrid between kale and a sprout and are likely to feature as an alternative to the classic brussels across restaurants and homes this Christmas.
Paul Grimshaw, Managing Director of Direct Delivered Produce Ltd, a wholesaler at New Covent Garden Market, started selling Kalettes six years ago. He says sales have increased significantly each year, and always during the lead-up to Christmas.
He says: "Kalettes are experiencing a significant year-on-year increase in sales, indicating a shift in consumer preferences for something new and different. We can see Brits increasingly opting for high-end vegetables within catering across the hospitality industry, which in turn encourages consumers to incorporate new food trends at home. Throughout Christmas and beyond, New Covent Garden Market plays a crucial role in supplying on-trend, top-quality, seasonal produce from wholesalers across the London South East of England."
UK-grown Jerusalem Artichokes are also becoming more popular as an alternative to potatoes and are selling in bigger volumes every year. Colorful January King cabbage is also becoming a popular alternative to the Hispi and Savoy varieties.
New Covent Garden Market is a part of the UK supply chain, with their 175 wholesalers connecting growers with consumers through hospitality and catering business customers across London and the South East.
New Covent Garden Market customers include British institutions like Harrods, Claridge's, and the capital's top Michelin-starred restaurants, to the Royal Households and the animals of London Zoo.
