Peru sent 33% of its bananas to the Netherlands

Peruvian banana exports increased by 58% in value in 2021

Between January and November 2021, Peru exported 197 tons of bananas for 219 million dollars, registering a 0.22% increase in the volume shipped and a 58% increase in value over the same period of the previous year. This significant growth was due to the increase in the average price, which rose to 1.11 dollars per kilogram.

The main destination for the Peruvian bananas was the Netherlands, which accounted for 33% of all exports, as Peru sent 58 tons worth 88 million dollars to this destination, 1% less in volume but 105% more in value compared to the previous year. In this destination, the average price of Peruvian bananas reached 1.50 dollars per kilogram, 107% more than in the previous year.

The United States was the second most important destination for Peruvian bananas with a 32% share of shipments, followed by Panama, with 6%.

It should be noted that the increase in the value of bananas has been caused by the increase in the cost of packaging materials and freight; also, due to the uncertainty generated by the pandemic among banana producers.
