Bulawayo: Nkulumane fruit and vegetable market is taking shape

A very large market place in Bulawayo, which redefine fruit and vegetable trading in the city, is taking shape in the suburb of Nkulumane. The fruit and vegetable produce distribution hub is being constructed near Nkulumane Mall. The project is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works under the Building Urban Resilience in Zimbabwe through Safe Markets and Green Solutions program.

The goal is to decongest the city center, which is flooded by fruit and vegetable producers on a daily basis. The project coordinator, Shadreck Zhou, said the project is being implemented in five cities countrywide: "This is a project led by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program. We are the implementing partners. It is a national pilot in five locations, Harare, Mutare, Bulawayo, Chipinge and Gwanda.”

Zhou said different projects are being implemented depending on the needs of the city with Bulawayo striving for decentralisation of its fruit and vegetable market places.
