James Howe, a banana farmer, is astonished by the lengths and turns his fruit takes to get to customers. The bananas are placed in 15-kilogram cartons, piled, and refrigerated the previous night before being transported along the east coast to Derby in Western Australia by trucks.
Some of these bananas may have traveled the longest distance from plantation to plate in the nation from Howe's farm in Walkamin, in the Tablelands area close to Cairns.
There are a staggering 6,880 kilometers between Walkamin and Derby and up to Perth. That's the equivalent of travelling across Europe.
Australia consumes more than five million bananas daily, making them the top-selling grocery item there. According to the Australian Banana Growers' Council (ABGC), bananas outsell every other supermarket brand in addition to other fruits and vegetables.
