Sam Vasala - Sai World

"We will go slowly into the Chinese markets, finding the right partners who will protect our brand"

Australian company Sai World produces and exports a wide variety of fruit and some vegetables, the main products are citrus, Stonefruit , cherries and onions.

The Australian citrus season got off to a late start this year, the sizes are small but quality is good according to Sam Vasala from Sai World. ”We have seen good demand for our citrus, despite the sizing. Demand from the Asian markets has been good, this could be due to difficulties in South Africa and good prices in Europe creating a shortage in Asian markets. The Australian season may go on a longer this year depending on maturity.”

Sai World will start exporting citrus to China this season, mainly Navels, Valencias, lemons ,mandarins and Cara Caras, this will include the easy peel Navels under the Koala Easy Peel brand. “It will be small volumes to start with, we will go slowly into the Chinese markets, finding the right partners who will protect our brand, it is a premium market and it is important to get it right.

“We are upgrading our packhouse with a new grader, packing line and cool rooms next year which will allow us to increase our volumes. We are also looking at the European and US markets next year as we will have more supply.”

Sai World will be back at Asia Fruit Logistica next month where they will promote onions and stone fruit as well as citrus. They will also have pineapples and mangoes from Vietnam.

“We have begun sending the first samples of Vietnamese mangoes to Korea and sent shipments of pineapples to Japan last month. We are also launching a new brand of Australian stone fruit this season.

Sam is also looking forward to the Tasmanian onion season which he reckons will start very early this year, “We expect to start with Tasmanian onions in December, the storage quality of the onions from Tasmania is always very good and we expect a good demand from Europe, due to less seed availability and the high energy rates there which will have an impact on production and storage.”
