Successful campaign ends for Egyptian garlic

The Egyptian garlic campaign has now come to an end, giving way to the spring onion campaign. Growers and exporters are pleased with an exceptionally good year, both in terms of volumes and prices.

Ralph Nakhal, from the growing and exporting company Tomna, commented: "The garlic campaign was very good compared to last year. We exceeded our sales target and were able to increase our volumes and broaden our customer base and destination countries. I'm delighted to report that we were able to export around 150% of our last season's volumes."

Year after year, Egypt stands out on the map of the global garlic industry, adds the exporter. "Egyptian garlic is gaining ground in more markets every year. Among Egyptian exporters, Tomna is acquiring a good reputation and position, thanks to our uncompromising attention to quality."

"Egyptian garlic has been particularly popular in Brazil, Europe, and North America. However, the Australian and Russian markets were slower than expected this year," adds Ralph.

As for prices, they have been satisfactory for exporters, according to Ralph: "The campaign began with a price level similar to that of the previous season. Prices then skyrocketed halfway through the campaign".

"We're now preparing for the next garlic season, with a slightly larger acreage. Meanwhile, here in Tomna, we've started planting spring onions to supply the European market in October, and we're very excited about what this season will bring," says Ralph.

The exporter concludes, "As we do every year, we'll be at Fruit Attraction in Madrid, meeting buyers interested in the different varieties of garlic, onion, and spring onion."
