Murcia lemon grower distributes more than 50,000 tons in latest campaign

In its latest campaign, the cooperative Limonar de Santomera has managed to distribute more than 50,000 tons of citrus fruits, mainly lemons.

Founded in 1982 in Santomera, a small municipality of just over 16,000 inhabitants located in the Region of Murcia, the firm has been promoting the value of cooperativism during its more than 40 years of history. Thus, the entity stands as a cooperative rooted in the environment, and not an exploitative multinational.

In the words of Antonio José Moreno, general manager of Limonar de Santomera, "the company was created to defend the interests of small and medium-sized producers who, were it not for the cooperative, would be unable to tackle a globalized market like the current one. This has led to us being the company that brings the most lemon producing partners together."

In fact, since 2017, Limonar de Santomera has managed to increase its production capacity by more than 25%, having reached 40,000 tons, and has now become the largest cooperative in Spain devoted to the production and marketing of lemons, both conventional and organic.

Regarding the line of 'bio' products, Limonar de Santomera is a pioneer in the organic citrus sector. The organic production already accounts for about 40% of its total volume and exceeded 18,000 tons last year. Specifically, the cooperative handles the organic cultivation of 10,000 tons of lemons, 5,000 tons of oranges, 1,500 tons of mandarins and 1,500 tons of grapefruit.

Through these two business lines, the company is devoted not only to the production and distribution of lemons, but also of all types of citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, limes, mandarins or kumquats), which are adapted to the requirements of each country and market.

The company exports to more than 20 destinations in Europe, the Baltic, the United States, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, South Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Malaysia, among others. "This has allowed us to become one of the main lemon trading companies worldwide," said Moreno.

The cooperative's facilities, which cover more than 20,000 square meters, have been recently renovated to make them more modern and efficient. This has required an investment exceeding 7.5 million Euro.

El Limonar de Santomera will be exhibiting at the next edition of Fruit Attraction, in Hall 7, stand 7B04.
