In March this year the Australian and Indian governments finalised the agreement for market access for Australian Hass avocados to the Indian market.
Australian avocado grower and exporter The Avolution has been involved in the process right from the start and was one of the three companies to send trial shipments to India in July 2023. The first large scale shipments will likely be sent in January 2024.
“The Avolution and the industry will start with air freight, Air Pallet loads, getting the customers used to and confident with Australian avocados, via air to the equivalent of two or three containers per week,” said Antony Allen, Chief Executive at The Avolution. “By the middle to late 2024 that will convert to sea containers, five to ten containers per week overall for the industry. We would be supplying 70% of this volume to India.”
Certified Australian growers are still expressing interest in shipping avocados to India, and Antony reckons it will amount to at least 75% of the production volume.
Daryl Boardman, Sam Manujith, Anthony Allen, Lachlan Donovan and David Rocha from the Avolution at Asia Fruit Logistica.
“There are already trusted receivers in India, many professional avocado receivers are already in the business of importing lower quality fruit from other producing regions in Africa or from very long transit time producers in South America.”
Initially, the Australia Industry will roll out an Australian avocado awareness promotion programme using Australian Cricketer Brett Lee as the spokesman.
“The Australian avocado production has seen significant growth in the last few years and the timing of the opening of the Indian market is perfect timing for that growth in avocado volume.”
