Irish fresh produce grower and supplier Donnelly Fresh Produce will be supplying pumpkins to three of Ireland’s main retailers this year. The company has been supplying Aldi and Supervalu /Centra for the past few years and this year adds SPAR to the list.
“We will supply 40,000 of our Irish pumpkins to Aldi and will be the sole supplier to SPAR and Supervalu/ Centra, in total we will grow in excess of 200,000 units this year. We will also supply Aldi with our white ‘ghost’ pumpkins, the first arrivals will be in store this week.
"The weather during the growing season has been challenging, with a lot of rain in July which is a key time for pumpkins.
“The wet weather may mean that yield is down, but we won’t know for sure until we harvest. Lower yield won’t affect the quality or our ability to supply our customers we always plan to each season, there is always a market demand for pumpkins at this time the year.” said Paul Hussey, Senior Trading Manager at Donnelly Fresh Produce.
Donnelly’s has been supplying cauliflower to Aldi for quite a few years now and this year they have signed their first long-term contract with the retailer which is worth 1 million Euro. Paul said this gives Donnelly Fresh Farms the security required to plan the growing of this crop in a sustainable way. “Instead of having to renegotiate contracts twice a year, we can now make plans to grow the volumes and arrange to grow in the most sustainable way possible”
