Green on the outside with a white flesh

Introducing Sugar Loaf: a rare pineapple variety from Ghana

Elefante Farms, a pineapple producer from Ghana, began its operations in 2021, based on the vision of its founder, Kingsley Ansong. On one of Kingsley’s visits to Ghana he tried the Sugar Loaf pineapple and couldn't understand why no one knew about it. He was convinced the world would love it if they tried it. “The world had to know,” says Ansong. Together with Juliane, the company’s vice president, they led the operations and their mission became to showcase the incredible fruits that Ghana grows to the world.

Elefante Green Gold on the field of Elefante

Branded as Elefante Green Gold – known as ‘Sugar Loaf’ or ‘Pain De Sucre’ in French is an ultra-rare variety of pineapple. “It’s unique in the sense that it is perfectly ripe even when green on the outside and has a soft white flesh compared to the typical yellow flesh commonly found in pineapples.” Sugar Loaf pineapples naturally have a higher brix value. Elefante Farms aims for 15-16% brix on arrival. The pineapples are shipped in a traditional 11kg pineapple box.

“Our premium product is the Elefante Green Gold Luxe box, a single pineapple wrapped in a unique box, locally designed, and manufactured. It’s an eye catcher and the perfect gift for anyone. Given that retail is a competitive space and differentiation is key, we know that if the packaging is captivating enough, customers will always be curious,” Ansong says. In less than two years, the Elefante Green GoldÔ pineapple made its way to premier stores in Los Angeles and Toronto.

Elefante Farms places heavy emphasis on presentation. “From the quality of our labels, the pineapple itself and even the crown, consumers will instantly notice a difference.” Each pineapple is harvested and inspected by hand, undergoing a rigorous quality control process. The company works closely with all their buyers and meets regularly with buyers all over the world to ensure client satisfaction. “Our transaction does not end once our client receives the product. We are extremely interested in each customers’ feedback and the after-sale process, making sure consumers love their pineapple.”

Melissa’s Produce/World Variety based in Los Angeles, California is the US largest distributor of exotic fruits and vegetables.

Melissa’s Produce is currently the exclusive distributor of Elefante Green Gold across the United States. “The company has been a tremendous help in getting us into stores and we are looking forward to a long and fruitful partnership with them,” said Ansong.

Elefante Farms harvests their pineapples every Saturday in Ghana and the shipment arrives in Los Angeles by Tuesday. It’s a four-day process with an incredible turnaround time considering the nearly 12,000 km journey. “Our pineapples are as fresh as you can find them,” Juliane says.

The company will be exhibiting at Fruit Attraction in Hall 10, stand 10A05A. “We cannot wait to share our product with the produce industry in person and let them experience the Elefante Green Gold™."
