With an eye on Spain in the meantime

Italian Rojo Brillante persimmon season about to start

The 50% drop in Spanish yields of Rojo Brillante persimmons could benefit the Italian companies growing and commercializing this typical fruit of the fall. In Spain, in fact, volumes have been affected by the bad weather and subsequent spread of fungi (Mycosphaerella species).

Orchard

FreshPlaza has talked about the positive expectations for the Italian campaign with Francesca Gallicchio from Gallicchio Frutta Srl, a company from Basilicata that has made Rojo Brillante its core business.

"Our Spanish colleagues, who have always been our main competitors, are starting to export as we speak. Their season will definitely be better than the last one, when estimates were drastically low (-80%), but supply should anyway be considerably lower than what had been forecast in the summer."

Ripening fruits

"Harvesting operations will start in early October (in line with previous years) and this year we will launch our new brand "Divino- Il kaki italiano". Over the past few days, new producers from the south contacted us to work together, so our estimates for the 2023 campaign have reached 1,500 tons."

Current state of plants

Orchards are looking good despite the problems caused by the weather. "Persimmons are ripening and quality seems good with medium-large grades. Our mission this year is to prolong sales at least until late January, which we have never managed due to the significant decumulation in warehouses. Divino persimmons will be placed in 30x50 branded crates with personalized strips and stickers on the majority of the fruits."
