Jürgen Wieser of Obst Kröpfl on Styrian apple growing

"The new star in the apple sky is Cosmic Crisp"

While some varieties only stay in it for a few months, others are stored until the start of the new apple season so that customers in the stores can enjoy fresh and crisp apples all year round. The latter is also the reason why new varieties are constantly being tinkered with. "The new star in apple heaven is Cosmic Crisp. It's got a bite to it that's huge. And it holds up on the shelf, too," company boss Jürgen Wieser of Obst Kröpfl tells the Kleine Zeitung, pointing to the decline of older varieties. "They are not suitable for such marketing channels and are usually not storable."

The Styrian company sells about 32,000 tons of apples and pears annually, making it one of Austria's largest fruit marketers. In addition to its trading partner Spar, the company also supplies numerous international customers. The company cooperates closely with the Obstgemeinschaft Steiermark (OGS). "We offer all common packaging," they tell us. The company also caters to special customer requests - the apples are not only sold in Austria, but also internationally. "Spain, for example, likes waxed apples."
