Larger, and more persimmons expected from California

Persimmon harvesting recently started in California. The Giumarra Companies started with Fuyu persimmons in mid-October and began packing Hachiya persimmons this week. “We are also eagerly awaiting the start of our Sugar & Spice™ persimmon harvest in mid-November,” says Kellee Harris, Vice President, Retail Merchandising Services. “Sugar & Spice is ready-to-eat and has a great flavor profile: highly sweet with notes of vanilla and cinnamon spice.”

The crop this year is expected to be high quality, with increased fruit size compared to last year’s harvest. Giumarra expects an increased persimmon supply over 2022’s crop, with promotable volumes, particularly in the Fuyu category.

Like many commodities in the state, the Fuyu crop is seeing a later start this season. “This is due to sustained temperatures in the mid-90s in the San Joaquin Valley through September causing a delay in the harvest,” says Harris. “We project that the Fuyu persimmon season will extend through December.” That said, the region saw ample rainfall during the winter which led to favorable growing conditions for the crop.

Steadily increasing demand
As for demand, it’s currently strong, particularly given demand for the fruit continues to grow year after year as more shoppers become familiar with this seasonal item.

To help promote its persimmon crop, Harris adds that Giumarra provides personalized marketing, merchandising, and sales support to retail partners. “As the largest domestic persimmon supplier in the United States, we are encouraged by the growing success of this item and year-over-year are able to introduce it to more households in the North American market given our increased supply. In addition to supporting our grocery retail customers with a marketing toolkit, we also established our dedicated consumer-oriented website at www.DoYouFuyu.com with FAQs, recipes, and more.”
