Peru has enacted a new law focused on promoting the industrialization of potatoes to create an environment conducive to investment and stimulate agro-industrial developments. As the leading potato producer in Latin America, with a production volume of 6 million metric tons in 2022, Peru aims to encourage and revitalize the supply chain to attract various sectors in both local and export markets. The law outlines key initiatives to support this goal.
The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (Midagri) will take a leading role in promoting technical assistance to potato producers. This assistance will target activities aimed at enhancing production quality, implementing technification, refining transformation processes, and, crucially, identifying markets and financing alternatives. Senasa, the National Agrarian Health Service, will play a role in supporting the use of certified seeds in potato cultivation, promoting collaboration among producers through associations.
Midagri will also drive mass awareness campaigns to promote the consumption of Peruvian potatoes, showcasing different varieties and derivatives for both national and international markets. Moreover, Midagri will actively engage in market identification for the industrialization of potato cultivation through its competent bodies.
Recognizing the significance of public and private financing, the Peruvian state will facilitate programs in collaboration with regional and local governments. This strategic approach aims to generate increased industrialization of potatoes, further strengthening Peru's position in the global potato market.
