"Due to the effects of El Nino Colombia has experienced elevated temperatures and diminished rainfall compared to the previous season, the maturation of fruit and its Dry Matter content is progressing at an accelerated pace. Consequently, we anticipate an earlier conclusion to the Colombian season this year," says Joel Pascual of Cartama Europe, who represents the Dutch sales office of largest avocado growing and exporting company in Colombia.

"Initial forecasts had suggested an increase in arrivals in March, aligning with the trend observed in 2023. However, these forecasts have since been revised, with the expected volume now reduced by nearly half. This adjustment implies that February will mark the culmination of robust fruit arrivals in Europe", says Joel.

Perfect storm of reduced supply and heightened demand
"This development, in turn, heralds an exceptional market window in March, a prospect that was already anticipated to be outstanding. The convergence of religious festivities, namely Ramadan and Easter, in March is poised to significantly impact not only the surge in consumption but also influence harvesting capabilities. The confluence of these factors creates a perfect storm of reduced supply and heightened demand, impacting not only major players like Morocco, Israel, and Spain, which are endeavoring to sustain fruit availability during this period, but also smaller origins such as Brazil or Tanzania."

"On a very positive note, the Traviesa season is progressing and advancing as well , with substantial volumes expected now to reach Europe in April instead of May as initially forecasted. This anticipated abundance is expected to arrive in Europe in a very good timing to reach customers."
Third year in a row with 52 weeks supply into Europe
"2023 has been for Cartama the third year in a row with 52 weeks supply into Europe and the 6th year in a row being the leading the volume of fruit grown and exported from Colombia. The office in Europe is following quick development and is already the number one receiver of Colombian Avocado in Europe and is supplying both retailers and premium importers 52 weeks a year."
