The Mombasa government, in collaboration with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), has initiated the 'Vegetable for All' campaign to boost vegetable consumption among its residents. The campaign particularly emphasizes the intake of dark green leafy vegetables and other vitamin-rich foods.
Despite 65% of Kenyans consuming green leafy vegetables as per the Global Diet Quality Project, the per capita daily consumption has stagnated at 100-130 grams for the past 15 years. This falls short of the World Health Organisation's recommended 400 grams of fruits and vegetables daily.
The project aims to reach 1.1 million people by 2026, targeting low-income families with children aged three to 12 in five counties, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Nakuru, and Mombasa. Denis Abri, the Project Manager, stated that the project would promote the Food Fiti brand to encourage a balanced diet and aims to increase access to fresh vegetables.
