Zambia achieves onion self-sufficiency

According to Zambia National Farmers Union President Jervis Zimba, Zambia is now self-sufficient as far as onions go. The nation has reached a milestone in onion production. This achievement comes after a period of two years without the need for imports, attributed to the increased output from private farmers. Zimba highlighted this progress during an inspection by President Hakainde Hichilema at Damust Farm in Mkushi District. Zimba acknowledged the government's role in this success by restricting onion imports, thus bolstering local production capacity.

President Hichilema encouraged youth participation in agriculture, citing its profitability and the sector's promising future.
