Canary Island tomato and cucumber growers are looking for alternative crops

Tomato and cucumber producers in the Canary Islands have submitted a restructuring plan to the regional government to ensure the sector's viability. This plan involves exploring alternative crops such as papaya or pitahaya, according to a statement by the regional administration.

The proposal was formulated by the agricultural organizations UGT, CC.OO., and Sitca, together with the grower and trade organizations Asaga Canarias, Asaja, Fedex, Coagrisan, Asocan, and Grupo Bonny, at a working table with Eduardo García, Deputy Minister of the Primary Sector of the Government of the Canary Islands, and José Ramón Rodríguez, Director General of Labor.

The proposed measures include the possibility of applying for early retirement for packing workers, sharecroppers, and field workers. The meeting, which took place last Wednesday, was characterized by the "will to work together" between all parties involved, the Canary Government emphasized.

The negotiating table of the Regional Rural Agreement, which expired in 2018, is scheduled to meet again on April 10.
