The Cameroonian government has outlined a plan to allocate approximately 500 million FCFA for the construction of four agricultural storage warehouses in the country's northern regions, with two facilities specifically intended for onion storage. This endeavor falls under the Support Project for Agricultural Value Chain Development, a collaborative funding effort between the national government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
In discussions with Cameroon Tribune, IFAD's post-harvest technology and nutrition specialist, Christian Kouebou, emphasized the project's goal to support cooperatives and vulnerable producer groups in rural areas. The focus is on enhancing food preservation capabilities, particularly for onions, through the introduction of modernized storage solutions. IFAD has committed CFA28.5 billion to bolster the rice and onion sectors from 2020 to 2026, aiming for the onion production to surpass 200,000 tons annually. The first phase reportedly increased onion producers' average income by nearly 60% and reduced post-harvest losses by 10% within a year, down from an initial estimate of 18%.
