The State Department for Irrigation is evaluating the expansion of the Kyeni Kagaari Gaturi Irrigation Project in Runyenjes, Embu County, with the aim to enhance its water capacity and double the number of beneficiary farmers. The project, initiated in 2015, has significantly benefited its 2250 members by ensuring a reliable income throughout the year and facilitating predictable farming activities. During a visit to various irrigation schemes in Embu, Principal Secretary Ephantus Kamotho highlighted the project's contribution to transforming members' livelihoods. The success is attributed to effective governance, and plans are underway to seek funding for the Thuci Dam development to further increase water availability.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire and Women Representative Njoki Njeru, who accompanied Kamotho, emphasized the government's commitment to expanding irrigation access to enhance household incomes and support the County Aggregation and Industrial Park. The project has encouraged diversification into crops like tomatoes, onions, French beans, bananas, macadamia, and avocados, with Hass avocado farming emerging as particularly profitable. James Muchiri, the project's chairman, noted the shift from reliance on rain-fed agriculture to participating in international food supply chains, marking a significant milestone for the community.
