Organic agriculture agreement between Chile and the EU remains in force

The Organic Trade Equivalence and Reciprocity Agreement between Chile and the European Union (EU) will remain in force, as confirmed by the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) of Chile. This decision was ratified at the Joint Committee with the EU, where the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DGAGRI) also participated. In response to the new European Regulation (EU) 2018/848, the SAG's Department of Organic Agriculture is conducting a comparative assessment between the organic regulations of Chile and the EU, with the goal of identifying discrepancies and proposing necessary adjustments to preserve the integrity of the organic certification system and ensure market trust.

The agreement signed with Chile in 2017, which is the only one of its kind that the EU has with any Latin American country, recognizes the equivalence between the organic certification standards of Chile and the 27 EU member states. This means that organic products certified under this agreement can enter the EU market without additional controls, thus facilitating the access of Chilean organic products to one of the most important markets globally and preventing duplication in the certification process.
