China is the leading supplier

Imported fruits are prevalent across Vietnam

Imported fruits are prevalent across Vietnam, from traditional markets to supermarkets and online platforms. The General Department of Customs reports that by mid-May 2024, Vietnam had imported fruits and vegetables worth 725.6 million USD, with the 2023 total reaching 1.96 billion USD. China is the leading supplier, contributing 794.7 million USD or 40.5% of the total imports, followed by the US and Australia.

Apples are the most imported fruit, totaling 237.1 million USD in 2023, or 21.8% of the fruit import turnover, available year-round in various price ranges. Grapes, tangerines, and pears also rank high in import volumes. These fruits, especially low-priced ones from China, dominate the Vietnamese market.

Industry experts attribute the high import volumes to market demand and the inability of domestic production to meet consumer needs for certain fruits. Vietnam imports fruits like apples and pomegranates due to cultivation challenges and relies on imports for grapes and pears to fulfill domestic consumption, despite having growing regions for these fruits.
