Strawberries, oranges, apples all went up in price

VAT reduction impacts food prices in Spain

In Spain, a VAT reduction has influenced price adjustments in major supermarkets, particularly affecting strawberries, oranges, and Golden Delicious apples. Facua-Consumidores en Acción's analysis, covering price trends from early May to June across eight grocery chains, highlights notable shifts.

Strawberries, for instance, have seen an average price hike of 50.9%, with Eroski marking a 90% increase, the steepest among the surveyed items. Oranges followed, witnessing a 23.8% rise on average, with Carrefour experiencing a 65.4% jump. Golden Delicious apples recorded an 11.2% average price increase, with Dia facing a 33.5% surge.

Additionally, the report indicates price escalations in potatoes, conference pears, Fuji apples, lemons, iceberg lettuce, onions, and lentils, while prices for white seedless grapes, carrots, sliced mushrooms, red potatoes, and garlic remained stable. Conversely, lemons, iceberg lettuce, oranges, carrots, red potatoes, Golden Delicious apples, and potatoes have become cheaper compared to the previous year.
