Moldova adopts reusable trays for fruit export

Moldova is quickly adjusting to the European market requirements. According to Stefan Bitlan, manager of major Moldovan fruit exporter Fani SRL, reusable trays help with the current apricot season: "This season, the delivery of Moldovan fruits in reusable trays from Euro Pool Systems has begun. Fani SRL delivered the first truck of apricots in reusable trays to a chain of stores in Germany, with which we've been working for three years.

Fani SRL decided to switch to this type of packaging primarily, because they want to promote sustainable practices and ensure product traceability and quality, Bitlan explains. "This type of packaging reduces waste and the environmental impact throughout the entire supply chain. On the other hand, we can provide our B2B clients with a wider range of diverse packaging. This year's plan is to partially switch the packaging to reusable trays from Euro Pool and IFCO, as preferred by our customers. We are currently delivering apricots, and later we will also deliver plums in reusable packaging."

Fani plans to supply diverse types of consumer-packed stone fruits and table grapes to the European market, with stone fruits being the flagship product for the Moldovan exporter. "We have a good harvest of apricots and decent quality this year, and exports actively have begun. Will continue with our already popular plums which come later in the season than most local European production, so this allows us to prolong the supply season for the consumer."

"Considering the fast development of our company and growing demand for quality fruits, Fani is planning to invest in a new, modern, high-performance production and packing facility, on which work has already begun," Bitlan states.

Since Moldova is not yet part of the European Union, most of the packaging is imported by producers from neighbouring Romania. This creates additional complications with customs clearance procedures. Despite this, in order to better serve customer needs, Moldovan producers such as Fani are searching for more efficient logistics solutions and partnerships.
