Global demand for frozen fruits and vegetables, an opportunity for Peru

In the next four years, the world market for frozen and prepared fruits and vegetables is expected to grow at a 6.1% average annual rate going from $340 billion in 2024 to $431 billion in 2028. According to the CIEN-ADEX Exporters Association's Economy and Global Business Research Center, given that Peru is an important producer, this is an opportunity for companies in the agro-industrial sector.

Consumers are looking for options from sustainable sources and environmentally friendly companies. Another trend is the demand for healthy foods that can be prepared quickly, which makes them a convenient and nutritious alternative.

According to the Research Center's "Trends in Frozen and Prepared Fruits and Vegetables" report (which includes processed, dehydrated, fermented, and pickled fruits and vegetables), these products are being integrally used at the global level, reducing costs and contributing to food security as they are safer and longer-lasting foods.

This segment is driven by the population's interest in trying new products and flavors, offering various options. They're also an alternative when fresh products are out of season or for people living in places where their availability is limited.

China, India, the US, Japan, and Italy, are expected to be the main markets for these products this year, accounting for 57.7% of global sales.

Exports
According to data from the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, between January and April 2024, Peruvian shipments of frozen and prepared fruits and vegetables totaled $370,618,000, i.e. 13.3% less than the $427,546,000 achieved in the same period of 2023.

The leading products were dry paprika (that hasn't been crushed or pulverized), canned mango, canned artichokes, frozen blueberries, frozen avocado, frozen pineapple, frozen açaí, canned asparagus, frozen cherimoya, canned piquillo pepper, olives, among others.

The US was the main destination in the first quarter of the year with $132,171,000, concentrating more than 35% of the total thanks to the FTA in force since February 1, 2009. This market purchased mangoes, artichokes, blueberries, avocado, paprika, and frozen and canned peppers.

Spain followed with imports of piquillo peppers, asparagus, artichokes, lemon rinds, and paprika worth $42,585,000 and an 11.5% share. Mexico, which purchased paprika, lemon rind, grapes, fruits, and fruits of the capsicum genus, ranked third with $38,343,000.

This offer reached a total of 73 destinations in this period. In addition, shipments from Algeria, Slovenia, India, Thailand, and the Philippines recovered.

The main exporting companies were Danper Trujillo, Virú, ADB International, Green Peru, Agroindustrias AIB, and Alsur, among others.
