China Week 27 Fruit Wholesale Market Report

New Zealand persimmons are on the market, price of imported pineapples rebounds

The overall demand in the imported fruit market has been weak recently. Among the imported citrus fruits, tangerines and Australian oranges performed well, while the prices and sales of South African oranges and grapefruits were less favourable. On the other hand, New Zealand persimmons entered the market last weekend, and the prices of imported pineapples and avocados have rebounded.

The market for South African oranges has been average recently, with prices of some brands and batches declining. Traders estimate that more fruits will arrive, but prices will remain unstable. Current issues with South African oranges include light peel colour, insufficient hardness, and higher losses. Some traders noted that sales of small-sized South African oranges are slightly better. In addition to the lower price, these oranges have fewer issues with hardness and losses. The price of blood oranges is also unstable. Additionally, traders mentioned that the popular Cambria oranges are expected to arrive in the market in August, much later than usual.

The price of Australian oranges has remained stable, with relatively strong sales. Similarly, the price of Egyptian oranges has remained roughly the same, but the market is weak.

South African and Peruvian mandarins have pushed up market prices due to limited arrivals. Traders reported that the quality of South African mandarins is good, with increasing Brix levels. Current prices are higher than the same period in previous years, and sales are strong. The arrival of Peruvian mandarins has been delayed by about half a month, but the quality remains consistent, and current arrivals are relatively small.

New Zealand crisp persimmons are now on the market. Prices are roughly the same as before, and quality is good, but current sales are not as strong as last year's sales. These persimmons are mostly sold in the Shenzhen area, where traders report lower purchase volumes and frequencies compared to last year.

The arrival of Indonesian pineapples has decreased recently, leading to a price rebound. Earlier, dense shipping schedules caused a concentrated arrival that slowed sales, leading to inventory backlogs and quality issues, which lowered the market. Currently, the volume of Indonesian and Philippine pineapples on the market has decreased, and prices are gradually recovering.

The market for American cherries has been poor recently. Due to slow sales, traders still have inventory to clear, which has reduced market purchase volumes. The price of the Skeena variety has dropped slightly.

Peruvian avocados.

The price of imported avocados has rebounded slightly. For example, the price of the #22 specification has increased from ¥70-¥80 per piece in the past two weeks to ¥90 per piece. Traders reported that sales are still slow, and quality is relatively uneven, with issues such as rough skin.
