Police recovers more than 1 ton of stolen melons in Portugal's Alentejo region

In Ferreira do Alentejo, Beja, a 43-year-old individual has been implicated in the theft of agricultural produce, leading to the seizure by the National Republican Guard (GNR) of a ton of melons and 60 kilos of watermelon. The GNR's operation, spanning from Monday to Wednesday, aimed at addressing thefts from agricultural farms within the municipality, resulted in the identification of the suspect and the recovery of the stolen goods, which included the aforementioned melons and watermelon, alongside a vehicle.

"Following the action, the recovered products were returned to their legitimate owners," the GNR stated. The local authorities, concerned by the frequency of such incidents, have sought increased GNR presence and inspections by the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE). Luís Pita Ameixa, mayor of Ferreira do Alentejo, voiced the distress of growers over the continuous theft and destruction of their crops, emphasizing the need for intervention by competent authorities during the ongoing harvest season.
