At the beginning of the 2024 Hass avocado campaign, the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass) projected exports would decrease by 16% over the 597,500 tons shipped in the 2023 campaign. However, recent estimates suggest that exports will only fall by around 10%.
According to Juan Carlos Paredes, president of ProHass, this correction is due to the constant performance of a segment of exporters that aren't affiliated with ProHass and behave differently than the large and medium exporters associated with ProHass.
"Shipments made by these exporters have remained constant and are exceeding 250 containers per week (each container with 21.5 tons) when it is usual that shipments start to decrease from week 18. It is difficult for ProHass to know if these other exporters will continue to ship 250 containers weekly over time. If they continue to do so for 4 more weeks, there would only be a nearly 10% drop in volume compared to 2023," he said.
Europe continues to be the main recipient of Peruvian Hass avocado. However, its share decreased slightly in favour of Asia, where there has been an increase in demand and prices. The Peruvian avocado is expected to be well received in the United States due to the decrease in supply from California and Mexico between June and August, which could favour an increase in prices and reduce the price gap between the Peruvian avocado and that of those origins.
