Carlos Londoño, General Manager of Jardín Exotics, Colombia

"We expect to export 12 million kilos of Hass avocado, exceeding initial prospects by 20%"

There are significant challenges in the avocado market. "The supply of avocados has been growing at a higher rate than the demand, which entails significant challenges for the entire supply chain and is forcing us to be highly competitive and sustainable," says Carlos Londoño, general manager of Jardín Exotics. The weather conditions also play a crucial role. The production has been affected by the El Niño phenomenon, but this has also resulted in a season with high quality fruit.

Founded in 2014 in Southwest Antioquia, Jardín Exotics was born out of the passion of a group of agricultural producers committed to innovation and the growth of Colombian agriculture. "We started with a 700 m² plant and today we have more than 5,000 m² of infrastructure and more than 1,000 hectares devoted to avocado cultivation," says Carlos. This growth has been possible thanks to the implementation of innovative ideas and sustainable production practices. We obtained various international certifications that have opened the doors to the most demanding markets.

Jardín Exotics has managed to considerably increase its exports, with the prospect to reach 12 million kilos of Hass avocado this year. "This first half of the year has been interesting, with an increase of 20% over the projected volumes," says Carlos.

The company's main market is Europe, which receives 60% of its avocado exports, although exports to the United States are increasing season after season. The Asian market is not yet an immediate target, but Jardín Exotics is often considering new opportunities while always ensuring the quality of its products.

Colombia's harvest usually peaks in January-February, May-June and September-October. "This has allowed us to be present in the market at really strategic moments," says Carlos, pointing out that the farm's returns this year have reached their highest point in years, considering the dynamics in the U.S. market, where Colombian avocados have stood out thanks to their quality and taste.

Jardín Exotics has also signed strategic alliances with organizations devoted to the preservation of natural resources and to education, thus strengthening its positive impact on the community and the environment. These alliances are not only beneficial for the company, but are also contributing to the sustainable development of the region.

Sustainability is at the core of Jardín Exotics, with an approach that encompasses the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, environmental and social. "For all these years, we have remained convinced that honest, passionate and disciplined work powers the well-being of a community. We value our experience with different population groups, especially with household-heading mothers," says Carlos.

"Jardín Exotics is not only exporting avocados, but also a sustainability and social responsibility model," says Carlos.
