Bert van Gelder, Sawari Fresh:

"Good demand for ginger from the industry"

Ginger sales are traditionally slower in the summer, and this year is no exception. "However, we do see an excellent demand from the processing industry, which is again fully preparing for all the juicing in the autumn," says Bert van Gelder of Sawari Fresh from Barendrecht.

The importer is currently receiving plenty of Brazilian ginger. "We ourselves have almost completed the Chinese season. In our view, the cost price in China is far too high compared to Brazil, and therefore it makes no sense to import from China, with all the MRL risks that always linger over the market. That's why we made the switch to Brazil, and meanwhile the Peruvian season has also started."

Bert expects a rising price for ginger in the coming weeks. "China is hardly shipping any product and if demand increases, the price will almost automatically go up." Sawari Fresh expects the first harvest of Dutch ginger from the greenhouse within two to three weeks. "That one looks good for now," Bert says.

Garlic
The market for garlic is one of ups and downs. "Currently, the new crop is coming in from China and prices are a lot higher than those of the old crop. We are already selling a reasonable volume, but that price will only increase in the winter months," Bert expects. However, logistics from China still remains challenging. "Because of the Red Sea problems, we are still sailing via the Cape. This leads to arrivals sometimes arriving one, but sometimes two weeks later than planned."
