UK avocado market remains robust amid economic challenges

Within the context of economic fluctuations, demand for avocados has not waned in the UK. Worldwide Fruit, a big player in the importation of avocados, is experiencing growth in this sector. Mark Everett, the Director of the avocado division, reported a 12.5% increase in sales, particularly in the "ripe and ready to eat" category. The firm imports approximately a million avocados each week, mainly from Peru, Chile, and South Africa, culminating in the handling of nearly 60 million avocados in 2023, with a turnover nearing £30 million.

Strategic sourcing from large-scale suppliers and the adoption of the Softripe ripening technology have been instrumental in this success. Softripe, described by Everett as a "game-changer," is the first of its kind in Europe and offers precise ripening control, leading to consistent quality and reduced waste. This technology not only delivers a superior product, but also affords the company a 30% reduction in energy consumption per kilo.

The introduction of its own avocado brand marks Worldwide Fruit's confidence in their product's quality, appealing to the wholesale and food service sectors. This move, supported by the consistency afforded by Softripe and strategic sourcing, indicates a positive trajectory for the company in the UK's avocado market.
