Blackcurrant: A profitable berry for commercial cultivation in Ukraine

Ukraine is one of the leading producers of blackcurrants in Europe, with this berry becoming increasingly popular among farmers. The significant areas dedicated to this crop are driven by its economic benefits and demand in both domestic and international markets.

Farmer Volodymyr Tymkiv grows various berries, including strawberries, redcurrants, and gooseberries, but blackcurrants dominate his fields. His nursery, with up to half a million blackcurrant seedlings, is among the largest in Ukraine.

Blackcurrants grown for mechanized harvesting are noted for their high quality: the berries come out clean and dry, which is crucial for further processing. This year, the price of blackcurrants was around 1.53 EUR per kilogram, ensuring high business profitability.

According to the Institute of Horticulture of the NAAS of Ukraine, last year's total harvest amounted to approximately 25,000 tons.

The main areas under blackcurrant cultivation are concentrated in the northern, central, and western regions of Ukraine, where the climate is favourable for its growth.

Most of the harvest is processed domestically into jams, juices, and other products. Additionally, blackcurrant essential oil can be used in aromatherapy, food production, and perfumery. Ukrainian blackcurrant varieties, developed by local scientists, are distinguished by large berries and high yields.
