Daniel Falla Hernández of Conpal Peru

Peru aims for growth in key markets with Hass avocados

Conpal Peru, led by Daniel Falla Hernández, has established itself as a major Hass avocado exporter, focusing on strategic markets such as Asia, Europe and the United States.

"Hass avocados are our main product. We export them mainly to China, Japan and Korea. This year, we have shipped between 89 and 100 containers to the Asian market," says Falla. Growth in Asia has been particularly remarkable, driven by growing demand from consumers who appreciate the freshness and quality of Peruvian avocados.

Although Asia is an emerging market for Conpal, Europe remains a key destination. "We export avocados to several European countries, such as Spain, France and Italy," says Falla. The company is also present in the United States, where Hass avocados are still a very popular product.

One of Conpal's most outstanding advantages is its ability to adapt to the demands of each market. Falla says that Europe, in particular, demands rigorous certifications. "Every year, the European market becomes stricter in terms of certifications, forcing us to become more competitive. It's a challenge, but it also ensures that we'll deliver a quality product."

For Conpal, one of the main challenges is the impact of the weather conditions on the harvests. According to Falla, this year's avocado production has been marked by a more abundant flowering, but with higher volumes on the market, prices will not be as high as in previous years. "We have had a good avocado season, with stable prices due to a lower production, but next year we expect higher volumes and probably lower prices," he says.

Logistics also plays a crucial role in the marketing of these perishable products. Falla says that the opening of the port of Chancay in Peru could mark a significant change for Peruvian exports. "If the transit time is reduced from 38 days to 26, the quality of the fruit will notably improve," he says, underlining the importance of this kind of logistical improvements to remain competitive in such a demanding market.

Conpal is not only looking to the future with optimism, but also aims to strengthen relations with existing clients and expand its sales network. The company sees great potential in Asia. "The day China consumes avocados on a large scale, the global supply won't be enough to meet that demand," says Falla, highlighting the opportunities that this market can offer in the long term.

Lastly, Falla addressed the importance of keeping the focus on quality and innovation. Conpal will continue to invest in certifications and in improving its processes, from harvest to export, to ensure that its products remain among the most demanded in the global market.
