In Kupwara district of Kashmir, the initial harvest of the apple season is underway, marking the commencement of apple picking activities in the region. This year's harvest features the Gala Mast variety, originating from high-density apple orchards, a method that is transforming the landscape of apple cultivation by offering higher yields.
The orchard, managed by the Horticulture Department, spans approximately 70 kanals and showcases a range of apple varieties, including the sought-after gala series and king roat among others. Dr Shazia Hassan from the Horticulture Department highlighted the diversity and market appeal of the varieties available. The department also facilitates auctions for the sale of these apples, providing potential buyers with a glimpse into the harvesting process through video clips.
This early harvest, taking place in August, allows farmers to circumvent the risks associated with late-season snowfall, which traditionally affects the November harvests of conventional apple varieties. The apple industry is a significant economic contributor in the region, supporting numerous livelihoods. In response, the Jammu and Kashmir Horticulture Department has initiated various programs to bolster apple production, including the high-density plantation scheme, operational from 2021 to March 2026.
