The 4th Malaysia International Durian & Cultural Fest 2024 (MIDCF) was initiated with the objective of showcasing durian and Malaysian culture globally. Tourism Malaysia's director-general, Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, expressed his aspiration for durian to gain international recognition, potentially as "DurianFest" or "Durian Day", thereby drawing tourists and durian aficionados worldwide to Malaysia.
In the previous year, Malaysia's fruit exports reached RM2 billion, with durians making up 56% of this figure. The country produced 455,458 tonnes of durians and anticipates a production increase to 505,853 tonnes by 2025. In anticipation of Visit Malaysia 2026, efforts are being made to improve tourism offerings, in alignment with the Malaysia Madani vision.
The MIDCF, hosted by DKING (Duricious Sdn Bhd), saw its inauguration by Manoharan, with supermodel Amber Chia as the festival's brand ambassador. Scheduled from September 11 to 16, 2024, the festival celebrates the "King of Fruits" and aims to enhance agro-tourism by highlighting durian farming techniques.
Attendees will explore durian cultivation, enjoy traditional Malaysian cuisine, and experience kampung life through farm homestay opportunities. According to DKING and MIDCF founder, Leron Yee, the festival welcomed over 700 visitors from China on its first day, with expectations of around 3,000 local and 900 international guests by its conclusion.
