In Ried near Kerzers, a centre of Swiss vegetable growing, Gutknecht Gemüse cultivates over 130 hectares of land, including 7 hectares of greenhouses. For Gutknecht, the farm shop offers a welcome opportunity to maintain a degree of independence from the retail trade. "It gives us more leeway," Pascal Gutknecht explains to lid. If the prices on the market are not right, the vegetables can be sold directly in the farm shop. "Sometimes the bulk buyers do give in," he adds.
The farm shop also plays an important role in the fight against food waste and is considered a testing ground for new products. "We like to try things out here, whether it's a new type of vegetable or the giant courgette," says Pascal Gutknecht. The direct contact with customers makes it possible to receive immediate feedback. Products that are not well received do not make it into the regular range and are no longer grown.
