Pakistan may soon encounter an onion shortage as import challenges from Afghanistan persist. Media sources indicate that despite fulfilling tax and duty obligations, traders at Chaman face obstacles in importing onions from Afghanistan. Customs officials at Garang Check Post and Shela Bagh Check Post are reportedly halting trucks laden with onions and grapes, demanding an extra Rs 5,000 for clearance.
Traders have called for immediate government intervention to facilitate smooth onion imports. The trade dynamics between Pakistan and Afghanistan, especially concerning onions and other agricultural commodities, are currently hampered by the uncertain border situation. With onions retailing at around Rs 200 per kg in Pakistan, a continued import halt could see prices soaring. The alternative of importing onions from India through the Wagah border is not feasible due to the current diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
