Cameroon drops to 13th in global banana exports

In a recent analysis by the Competitiveness Committee, Cameroon has been positioned as the 13th largest banana exporter globally in 2023, marking a descent of three places from its previous standing. The country experienced a 10% contraction in banana exports, leading to a reduction in its global market share from 2.3% to 1.8%. The European market remains the primary destination for Cameroonian bananas, despite increased competition from South American countries.

Belgium was the largest recipient of Cameroonian bananas, accounting for 69.3% of exports, followed by France with 16.2%, and the UK with 12.5%. The Compagnie Fruitère de Marseille, based in France and the largest banana producer in Cameroon, plays a crucial role in the sector. Its subsidiaries, Société des Plantations du Haut Penja (PHP) and Compagnie des Bananes de Mondoni (CDBM), dominate over 70% of the nation's banana exports. Additionally, other significant entities like CDC and Boh Plantations Plc benefit from the expertise of this French conglomerate.
