Heavy rainfall in Pune leads to crop damage and spike in fruit and vegetable Prices

In Pune, heavy rainfall has led to crop damage across several areas, causing a decrease in the number of vegetable-loaded trucks arriving at Market Yard from the usual 1,200-1,500 to 1,000 on Thursday. This situation has been attributed to the adverse weather conditions experienced in Alandi, Pimpalgaon, Wada, Rajgurunagar, Kude, Pait, Chakan, Kanhersar, Kadus, Bhosari, and Haveli. Mahesh Hande Deshmukh, a member of the Market Yard Traders' Association, confirmed the reduction in supply.

Consequently, there has been a 10-15 percent increase in the prices of fruits and vegetables in the wholesale market, as noted by Yuvraj Kanchi, a fruit trader at Market Yard. This price surge is expected to affect the retail market shortly. The heavy rainfall has particularly impacted farmers in Velha taluka, with significant concerns over further crop damage. Kiran Mankar, a local farmer, reported a loss of approximately ₹1 lakh in tomato crops due to the rains.
