Week 40 fruit wholesale market report

Chinese avocados are arriving steadily, and blueberry prices are on the rise

In this week's wholesale market, the supply of imported avocados and pineapples has increased, while the supply of Peruvian blueberries has declined further, leading to price hikes. In contrast, prices for some imported citrus fruits, such as Australian oranges, have dropped. Among domestic fruits, the availability of popular items like Yunnan avocados and premium apples is also growing.

The avocados on sale from China are primarily produced in Yunnan and Sichuan, with Yunnan contributing the largest volume. According to traders handling various avocado varieties, the quality of domestic avocados is stable and improving year by year, though the cost of sourcing remains high. For instance, Yunnan avocados are priced similarly to Peruvian avocados at around ¥110 per box. To reduce costs, some traders repack smaller domestic avocados into smaller cartons containing two fruits, which appeal to customers seeking cheaper, single-packing options.

The supply of imported avocados increased this week, causing prices to drop early on, but they rebounded by the end of the week. Chilean avocados returned to previous price levels, and Peruvian avocados also saw an increase, now selling for about ¥120-¥130 per box. However, traders expect that Peruvian avocado prices will not rise further. Prices for New Zealand avocados remain steady, though traders note that despite their good taste, their rough skin affects market appeal. Overall avocado sales have slowed recently, with Peruvian avocados performing relatively well.

Philippine pineapples have maintained high prices for some time, but increased arrivals this week caused prices to drop by about 15%, now selling for ¥140-¥150 per box.

Meanwhile, the supply of Peruvian blueberries has decreased, pushing prices up once again. Blueberries sized 18mm+ are currently priced at around ¥190 per box. Traders report that while demand remains strong, they are hesitant to purchase more, with many buyers waiting for prices to drop.

The supply of Vietnamese dragon fruits has improved compared to previous months, though the volume of first-grade fruit remains limited.

As for premium domestic apples, Qingsen apples from Shandong, China, have started arriving in greater quantities. Traders note that the current selling price remains stable, as the season for this variety is short and its taste is well-regarded. Among the premium domestic apple packaging available, Qingsen apples make up a significant portion of the offerings.
